In 2000, Michael settled in an area of Mozambique bordering the Zimbabwean highlands. Over the next few years, he spent frequent weekends in the coastal city Beira sitting in with the storied Oceana nightclub’s house band. When at home in Chimoio, he performed often with songwriter Célio Figuieredo, featured at left strumming for friends at a bar near Hornsby's house outside town. In 2003, Michael went to Maputo, in the south, to record. After many nights chasing music around town, he was soon performing with support from the musicians below.
