Hornsby moved to Dallas in 1996 and quickly met other young musicians eager to play. His singing and self-taught guitar work soon fueled the collective efforts of tenor, alto, and soprano saxophones, bass, and drums, forming a new project, Pederson Road Band.

The foursome performed throughout Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana, giving the young songwriter opportunities to travel and share billing with some of the same folks he'd spent his teenage years chasing all over Texas. In 2000, despite the band's continued growth, Michael left Texas.
